Sustainability Initiatives
Here at the Heart of Compassion, we engage in multiple green initiatives to foster a sustainable future for our environment. While fighting hunger is our main mission, we have also implemented numerous sustainable practices into our model to be as environmentally conscious as possible. Here are our three main objectives:
Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
When food begins to rot, methane– a greenhouse gas that is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide–is emitted and contributes to climate change. Here at Heart of Compassion, we have recovered millions of pounds of food that would have been sent to landfill sites to rot. In 2022, we avoided over 5,600 metric tons of CO2, equivalent to taking 14,603 cars off the road! Not only are we feeding people in need, but we are making a positive impact on climate change.
Invest in Renewable Energy
We have been fortunate enough to receive multiple solar panels to power our refrigeration infrastructure. Typical electricity is expensive and requires lots of energy. By using a renewable, sustainable energy source, we are reducing our carbon footprint and paving the way for future food banks to follow the path of clean energy.
Recycle and Compost Our Waste
With the high volume of packages we receive, organic and non-organic waste is inevitable. However, we have developed a recycling infrastructure to minimize our waste and reduce our environmental impact. We dispose of our organic waste in composting bins to ensure we do not contribute to greenhouse gasses. The compost we create can be a natural fertilizer for farmers and reduce the need for harmful pesticides and chemical pollutants. We also recycle plastic and cardboard waste to reduce virgin production and introduce our waste into a circular economy.
